Torrance, Calif. ¨C Rydeen Mobile Electronics recently completed the testing phase of its upcoming Mobile DTV Receiver, the RAC-100, in Southern California. There is currently at least one station¡ªthe local ION Media Networks affiliate¡ªbroadcasting Mobile DTV signals in the area.
In-vehicle testing was conducted by connecting the RAC-100 to a Kenwood multimedia head unit and utilizing the stubby antenna included with the RAC-100, magnetically mounted to the rear left roof section of the vehicle. The vehicle was driven throughout Los Angeles and the South Bay area.
¡°We were very pleased with the reception quality of the RAC-100,¡± said Phil Maeda, Rydeen president. ¡°There were a few areas on the freeway when the signal strength was low, and therefore the picture was pixilated, but once the signal increased, the RAC-100 quickly reacquired the signal. As more stations come online with Mobile DTV, we expect that demand for the receivers, and simple competition, will move companies to improve and enhance the signal overall.¡±
The RAC-100 is a black-box device that can be added to any multimedia system with RCA A/V inputs. It is powered by an included cigarette lighter adapter or can be hard-wired to a vehicle¡¯s electrical system. A remote control is included. The unit features Auto Scan (to find all of the broadcasting stations in a given area) and independent volume control for standalone installations.
With the FCC finally approving the sale of mobile DTV receivers that do not include analog tuners, more broadcasters nationwide are testing and deploying mobile DTV equipment in their stations. Recent news stories show positive results¡ªand positive consumer feedback¡ªfrom testing areas such as Washington D.C., Detroit, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
Rydeen will be exhibiting the RAC-100 at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in 2011. The unit is expected to ship in the first quarter of 2011. MSRP is yet to be determined.
